Cavern Landmark System
The Cavern is for-as-long-as-that-rock's-been-there old. It is semi sentient - only 'brought online' when people use their literomancy to 'talk' to it or otherwise engage with it. As people do so, the Cavern expands its influence in the Tomeverse and Chiroptera's home grows.
The Cavern remembers all the places it has been and is continually gathering new data of places it could go as members join House Chiroptera. Or maybe the Cavern has known these caves all along and simply updates the nearby landmarks necessary to allow movement within its walls.
Cavern Movement Rules
1. The Cavern moves when the reigning monarch changes.
(E.g. we now have the Spelunker's Guild)
4. If the Cavern is literomantically interacted with, structures within the Cavern can be changed depending on how much literomanic power is used, who by (e.g. the Queen will give the highest power, the lowest power from a temporary or new resident), and how long they have been doing it.
(E.g. Queen TaraFaeBelle and Phyreball have been playing with the Cavern walls for years at this point)
5. If the Cavern is respected by Chiropterans living in the Cavern other cave openings are possible.
- It 'attaches' itself to a pre-existing cave.
- If no one lives in the Cavern, this is all that will happen during that reign.
- If well regarded, new openings from prince/princesses may appear as well.
(E.g. we now have the Spelunker's Guild)

5. If the Cavern is respected by Chiropterans living in the Cavern other cave openings are possible.
- Temporary cave openings from between where the Chiropteran previously lived and the Cavern (these may close once the Chiropteran builds a place to stay in the Cavern)
- Cave openings from the Cavern to other caves in the area (starting in areas near the Cavern, extending to all places in the Protectorate)
- Possible to any other caves in the world.
E.g. ‘Friends of the Cavern’ may have a cave or two in their protectorate that could link up.
E.g. Between Lapin's Chiroptera Embassy and the Cavern
Landmarks
The Cavern works based on LANDMARKS.- You know that the space between your office has a rockpool, a sparkling speleothem and a stalagmite with a face on it that looks suspiciously like your cousin - these landmarks will likely stay the same between most instances of the Cavern.
- To get from the Cavern to Terrigal Beach is via 5 landmarks? Well, the space between those landmarks won't take as long the next time you go. (Instead of 2.5 hours first time, it might take 15 minutes from then after)
- It took you 5 hours spelunking a new cave system and you only noted 3 landmarks (as everything else was the cave same)? It'll take 15-20 minutes to go through that route now. (Or 100 hours. though that's only happened once so far).
Note that directions are best used by landmarks, for the only assurance you'll get somewhere is by passing said landmarks. Now, if you take a right instead of a left you may still get to where you are going, but if you turn at a flowstone instead of a helictite that could cause you to get lost.
The closer you are to the center of Chiroptera's main habitat, the more likely you are able to get a "normal map". At least more places on said map are situated in about the right spot. The post office is always nearby the Cavern's main entrance, for example, though the distance between the two may vary. As such, Chiropteran maps will rarely give a distance or estimated arrival time. Alternate scales have been attempted, such as the 'number of sticky notes additions to pockets', or shouts of 'I could add this' with limited success. Grown From the Past
Another topic of note is the Cavern’s insistence of collecting from caves it has made home before. The current placement are the Jenolan caves, NSW, Australia (nearish Sydney) yet those who traverse the walls of the Cavern frequently (e.g. Queen Tara and her Knightwings) can 'feel' the boundaries of the Cavern and the Jenolan Caves, probably due to the enormous amount of energy they have exchanges with the walls over the years. The Cavern remembers all the places it has been and is continually gathering new data of places it could go as members join House Chiroptera. Or maybe the Cavern has known these caves all along and simply updates the nearby landmarks necessary to allow movement within its walls.

We're not lost... just going on an adventure!
See, this is pretty, right?! Wouldn't have seen that if we knew how to get where we're going!
Typical Directions
You know what - I think I remember seeing that last time we came here... Oh! and afterwards, there's a post office somewhere too!
Travel Time Inconclusive
In the same context that the expression "hair past a freckle" is used elsewhere to explain someone has no idea what the time is when asked, in the Cavern people now use "a drop past a stalactite" or “an ink drop past a stickynote”, depending on how close you are to the center of Chiroptera in the Cavern.
Annnd I'm on time!
