The Game of Tomes Organization
What is Game of Tomes?
Game of Tomes is, at its heart, a writing game that is intended to encourage different forms of storytelling. Originally inspired by National Novel Writing Month, players join a team (called a House) and write during event months. Word counts are contributed towards a House's overall score. The winning House at the end of an event month gets prestige and bragging rights. This game began on Twitch and uses the Channel Point Reward system to enter words and calculate results. However, we are beginning to expand into hosted events (either in person or on social media) that allow people who do not use Twitch to participate as well. Over time, we have invented many expanded rules to consider word counts or equivalents. All forms of storytelling are valid projects within the Game of Tomes, from novels to short stories, to filmmaking, to poetry and songwriting, and even such forms of media as video game creation, worldbuilding, and RPGs. For a complete list of how words are counted, please consult our landing page or our article on Game Rules. Our Purpose
Game of Tomes exists to encourage writing, creativity, storytelling, and literacy. We believe strongly in the power of the written word. Often, writing can be a lonely profession. We provide incentives, friendly competition, and camaraderie to encourage people in their creative storytelling endeavours, whatever those endeavours happen to be. We do not operate at a profit and are seeking official non-profit status. The Lore
To that end, there is an overall collective plotline within the Game of Tomes. This storyline began in 2020 almost by accident. We find that it encourages people to exercise their creative powers, and so we have spent considerable efforts in developing our fictional universe. We refer to this storyline and its fictional elements as "the Lore." Participation in the Lore is entirely optional, and is not required as a condition of play. Participation is governed by its own set of rules, detailed in A Guide to Joining the Roleplay in the Game of Tomes. Essentially, taking part in the Lore is participating in a massive, freeform roleplaying game with multiple protagonists, in which cooperation with your fellow players to create the story is essential. It also means creating media that is aired on our Twitch and YouTube channels that tell those stories. All videos created by Game of Tomes are released under a Creative Commons, Attribution, Non-Commercial, No Derivatives license. We are, however, working towards creating written works within the universe that will take the form of novels, stories, and possibly licensed RPGs. These will seek to pay the creatives who participate in them. Our Impact
We are very proud of our statistics! Using National Novel Writing Month's 50,000 word goal for a monthly event as a comparative, we find that roughly 25% of our participants succeed at writing at least 50,000 words per event, as opposed to National Novel Writing Month's 8-12%. About 10% of our participants, commonly known as "Power Writers" in our community, achieve twice that (or more!) Our average participant will show a 150-200% increase in output if they participate regularly (practice makes perfect!) Further, while we believe participation can benefit anyone who wants to write, we find it works especially well for neurodiverse participants. The combination of newness in our story plots, a supportive community, the pressure of a monthly deadline and a personal challenge, and the friendly competition, seems to be an extremely effective formula. Perhaps this is because the creators of the Game are themselves neurodiverse. We have a significantly higher percentage of neurodiverse Tome Knights than would be reflected in the average population. Since the dissolution of National Novel Writing Month, we have found that there are several enthusiasts out there who are looking for something to fill that void. As a similar word count generating event with measurable goals, we provide similar incentives and encouragement, with a few extras, and since we have been around for a few years, we already have a sustainable infrastructure. Our structure having been built on Twitch, and having been integrated with its platform, has somewhat limited our reach, but we anticipate that will change with our expanded hosting policies.Structure
Our Organization is headed by the three Founders and creators of the game: Diane Morrison, Erin McRoy, and Jamie Field. While these three comprise the Board of Directors, in practice, Diane does most of the interfacing with the day-to-day running of the Organization.
The Founders are supported by officers whom we collectively call "The Organizers." The Organizers consist of all House Leaders, Satrium (the creator of our all-important bot that calculates results,) our Web Manager Amy Winters-Voss (ShyRedFox,) our Public Relations and Marketing Manager Timothy Anderson (MrBigTAnderson,) and our Discord Manager, Billy West (AttorraRu). All Organizers are also players and they design and manage the game with the principle "maximum fun, minimum bullsh*t." They are appointed by the Founders, although it's generally more accurate to say that they are volunteers and the Founders accept their offers of assistance.
Each House each has its own leadership structure who answer to the House Leaders. These officers are appointed by the House Leaders and serve particular functions within the Lore as well as the management of the Game:
House Leader: The House Leader is the leader of the House. Their job is to rally their team to write and provide encouragement and support, as well as answer questions and render any necessary assistance. They also enforce our Code of Conduct.
Seneschal: The Seneschal is the right hand of the House Leader and supports them in their efforts. They may also serve as an interim leader if necessary.
House Heir: The House Heir is the leader in waiting. They work with their House Leader, assist them in their tasks, and are prepared to assume the leadership of the House should it become necessary.
Regent: From time to time, a House may have a Regent. This is an interim leader who assumes all functions of the House Leader until either a new House Leader can be found, a House Leader returns from a leave of absence, or they are confirmed as the new official House Leader.
House Librarian: The House Librarian maintains the records and Lore of the House. In practice, this usually means keeping articles updated on our website, as well as keeping records of important events and event results. Their focus tends to be more on the Lore than on the business affairs of the Organization.
Bodyguards: Bodyguards serve more function in the Lore than they do in the management of the Organization, but members of a House often look to them for leadership and support as well.
All other "Tome Knights," as we call our players, are members of a House. They might have other "titles" within the House, but these carry no additional duties. They are strictly roleplay based.
In addition, there are two departments within the Game of Tomes structure that are not affiliated with any particular House. The Self Care Mafia works to make sure that writers who participate in our events are taking care of themselves. It can be easy in the intensity of competition to neglect sleep, proper hygiene, food, and other basic necessities, especially for a group that has a tendency to hyperfocus. The SCM makes sure they don't do that by incentivizing self-care with rewards in the form of badges, and some friendly nagging.
The Chaos Cartel works to be encouraging. They maintain the "Inspiration Team," which tries to offer daily inspiring quotes with personal stories during an event month. They come up with ideas to promote joy, often at random. They sponsor challenges to keep people active and working to pursue their dreams, and to not lose sight of the fact that we do this for fun.
These two departments are maintained strictly by volunteers who take these goals on in addition to their other activities within Game of Tomes. The Self Care Mafia is headed by Amy Winters-Voss, and the Chaos Cartel is headed by Diane Morrison and Billy West. We also maintain a Discord server, as well as a presence on Twitch. Our Moderators are responsible for maintaining our Code of Conduct within our community, and managing the daily tasks of maintaining our social media platforms. Mods are recommended by the House Leaders and are appointed by the Founders.

Public Agenda
Assets
At the moment, being a grassroots community initiative, the Game of Tomes operates in the red. Most of our group assets are donated by one of the Organizers and paid for out of their own pockets. This includes, but is not limited to: professional accounts on Canva, HeroForge, services for streamers, web hosting services, and various audio-visual material asset platforms used in the creation of our Lore productions. To help sustain these expenses, we have a Patreon account and an official Twitch channel that accepts Subscriptions and Bits (small monetary donations).
Demography and Population
Over time, about 500 people have played the Game of Tomes as "Tome Knights." We typically have about 60 participants in April and July, and around 100-125 participants in November. About 50 people actively participate in the community year-round.

Youth Policy
- Minors or youth are defined as anyone who has not reached the age of legal majority. This varies between countries, states and other jurisdictions. Be sure of the age(s) of majority in your area.
- Minors or youth under 16 years of age must have written parental consent to participate in Game of Tomes.
- Game of Tomes welcomes the participation of minors in its activities, but typically does not hold any youth specific activities. Any Game of Tomes group holding youth specific activities shall adopt youth safety protocols including at a minimum: a “two-deep” leadership policy and a no one-on-one interaction policy regarding adults and youth involved in youth specific activities.
- Whether or not youth specific activities are occurring, parents or guardians of minors shall have ultimate responsibility for the welfare and behavior of their minors at all times. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian who is responsible for the minor to ensure that the minor is safe and not in danger. At events and activities in which minors participate in any way, participating minors must either have a parent or legal guardian present at the event/activity, or a temporary guardian present in possession of a properly executed document authorizing the temporary guardian, at a minimum, to act for the safety and well-being of the minor. No policies developed regarding minors relieve parents/guardians of their primary responsibility for the welfare and behavior of their minors. This policy requires parents/guardians to ensure that their minors are appropriately supervised at all times.
- It is generally appropriate for law enforcement authorities to be contacted if a minor is involved in any crime. If a minor appears to have been the victim of a violent crime, law enforcement authorities MUST be contacted.
- No one-on-one interactions: One on one interactions between adults and minor members must be avoided except for members of the minor's family, and any person designated as the temporary guardian of the minor by the minor's parent or legal guardian, except that one on one interactions between an adult and minor are permitted if they occur at an observable and interruptible distance by another adult. It shall not be a violation of this policy for an adult to have one-on-one interaction with a minor provided the adult is no more than three years older than the minor. Interaction means communication or direct involvement between an adult and a minor. Incidental contact or actions taken to avoid or promptly terminate one-on-one interactions are not considered interactions within the meaning of this policy.
- Some of the material in our Lore may not be appropriate for all ages and all viewers or players. It is the parent or guardian's responsibility to assure the minor is not exposed to Lore material that they would deem inappropriate.
- Roleplay channels on our Discord server are regulated by Content Ratings. Minimum ages for participation in said channels are governed by those Content Ratings. Minors found in inappropriate channels will be banned for their protection.
- We have an NSFW channel on our Discord server. Minors are not allowed in it — period. This is a violation of Discord Terms of Service as well as our policies, and minors found violating this policy will also be banned.
