Human

Humans are one of many species that exist within the Realm. Once having believed themselves to be the only sophant species on Earth, they have since discovered that they are, in fact, one of many, most of whom made their appearance (or reappearance) upon the restoration of Literomancy in 2020.

Basic Information

Behaviour

Most human cultures have had to make considerable adjustments to their ways of thinking since the return of Literomancy. Magic being obvious has forced considerable adjustments to technology and society in most of the known world, and the incorporation of other sophants has resulted in the revisiting and rewriting of laws all over the planet. Some humans have reacted negatively and have struck out at those things which have changed their world, such as literomancers in general. In some places, literomancers, and other sophants, are actively persecuted, while in others, they are embraced. In much of the world, they have even become key figures in government and military forces.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Humans are one of many sophants who can exhibit the powers associated with Literomancy, which is a form of magic dependent upon the existence of a form of written, or otherwise recorded, language. As such, they are capable of displaying a wide variety of powers and abilities, including extrasensory ones.

Civilization and Culture

History

For most of human history, they have been nomadic hunter-gatherers, following the migrations and movements of the animals they depend on for sustenance. Humans began exhibiting modern behaviours about 160,000–60,000 years ago. The Neolithic Revolution occurred independently in multiple locations, the earliest in Southwest Asia 13,000 years ago, and saw the emergence of agriculture and permanent human settlement; this, in turn, led to the development of civilization and kickstarted a period of continuous (and ongoing) population growth and rapid technological change. Since then, a number of civilizations have risen and fallen, while a number of sociocultural and technological developments have resulted in significant changes to the human lifestyle, the literomantic revolution being only the latest of many.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Relationships with other species have been rocky, to say the least. While naturally curious, it has also been a common practice in human history to dominate and exploit the other creatures they share the world with, justifying it by virtue of their superior intelligence. This pattern of domination and exploitation has even extended to other humans, especially those with visible physical differences from those of a given culture or ethnicity. Dealing with other sophants in the world has been a challenge to most existing human societies, forcing them to confront their beliefs, laws, and cultural viewpoints.
