The Mushroom Flower

In the depths of Windy Willows there are several species of plants hiding in the darkness. One such plant is called the Mushroom Flower, and its fruit is a delicacy amongst the members of House Meles  In the early stages they look like a flower you would find on the surface, it is frequently described as looking like a daisy or a sunflower. When the plant is in the ripening stage small delicate mushrooms will grow from the center of the flower. No one is sure how exactly this plant stays alive this far underground, but scientists are working on it.

These mushrooms are small, no bigger than the finger of most fully grown adults, and very fragile. This makes bringing them up to the surface difficult, and cooking them even harder. Inside of each of the mushrooms are a bunch of tiny seeds, waiting for a creature of the caves to each them and spread them around.

These fruits fetch a hefty price at the markets, due to the rarity and sometimes danger of harvesting them. They are frequently reserved for high ranking members of Melesian society, in hopes of gaining favor from said individuals.

The "mushroom" part of the flower is frequently used in salads, cooked, eaten raw, really any way is good. As long as the person eating it has washed it off due to the cave dust and possible Glitter on it.

They aren't as good as donuts, but they come dang close to it.
— Anonymous

As seen above, donuts still reign supreme in terms of the most popular food in Meles. But there is still a demand for them. The taste is difficult to describe - they are sweet yet savory. The best ones have a crunch to them as if you have bitten into a hard pretzel.
