The Ship

The Ship is the name by which a mysterious structure in Stairway to Heaven is known to the settlement's inhabitants. It resembles a sailing ship, but it is constructed of unusual materials that would seem to be contradictory to that purpose.   The Ship is hovering off the edge of "the Spacedock," which is an extended bridge that terminates in a gateway into open space. It is not attached to the Spacedock by any visible means, nor is there any detectable method by which the Ship maintains its position. There is no hum of an engine, no whirr of fans, and no discernable energy field. It just... stays there.

Purpose / Function

The best guess that anyone can make about the purpose of this odd structure is what inspired its name. It looks, by its shape and architecture, like a small sailing ship, perhaps a schooner. It has a mast, a crow's nest, a keel, and a bowsprit, which is even equipped with a "figurehead" of sorts — the head of some kind of "draconic" creature.
However, there are several features about the Ship that seem contrary to that purpose. For instance, it is built of the same sort of asteroid brick and pinkish tile that the abandoned tower-structure of Stairway to Heaven is made from, which seems an unusually "solid" material out of which to build a sailing ship. Second, it has no sails. It is possible that the sails simply decayed over time, or were taken by someone, but there are no signs that there ever were sails; no brackets or bolts to fasten them to, no capstan, no remnants of fibre or fabric or polyfibre. Third, it seems unlikely that anyone would try to sail a ship through the open space of The Firmament, since there is no water to sail upon and no wind to fill any sails.

Alterations

The only alterations the Stairwards have made to it is to install lighting — which it didn't have.

Architecture

The Ship is constructed of the same materials as the odd tree-tower structure that forms Stairway to Heaven, which is part of its mystery. If it is a spaceship, why would it be constructed of yellow asteroid bricks and whatever pinkish material was used to make its tile? And why would it have open windows? If it isn't, why is it floating off the edge of a city structure that clearly looks like a docking bay, and why does it look like a boat? But if it's a spaceship, why is it built like something of a houseboat, but without motor, engine or sails? And what was the black draconic creature that contributed its head to the bow?
It's just... confusing.

Defenses

The Ship is armed with a form of magical energy "cannon" that fires raw bolts of purple energy. Two of them have effects similar to that of conventional weapons, damaging beings and structures. Four of them seem to be capable of differentiating between living beings and structures, and will not damage structures at all. These are the only weapons that exist in the city, aside from personal armaments (rarely carried) and magical power (possessed by almost everyone.)

History

History? snort The best we've got is wild speculation. It was here when I got here, that's what I can tell you.
