Badgerfolk

Garth by Shyredfox + HF
We look cuddly, but don't ever cross badgerfolk. We don't forget wrongs done to us. Granted, if there's a true 180 and heartfelt apologies made, we'll probably forgive. But if you don't make it right by us, watch out! We also remember kindness and will do our best to return more than we received.
— Garth, Meles badgerfolk sentry
Badgerfolk, also called badgerkin, are anthropomorphic badgers. Unlike Werebadgers, they do not shapeshift. But it can be hard to tell a Werebadger in humanoid form from a badgerfolk. Most of the known badgerkin tend to reside in the Meles Protectorate.

Temperament

Badgerfolk are "known" for being grouchy. But this often isn't a fair assessment. Just because a badgerfolk is a little terse, doesn't mean they're grumpy. They just prefer to use fewer words. Much more for them is expressed through physical signs—gestures, posture, doing thoughtful things for another (such as bringing tea to someone that just came in from the cold), or refusing to help (a sign that you're in hot water). Once you study the language of action, then you'll more easily understand badgerfolk, and you'll likely make lifelong friends.   Many badgerkin are actually easy going and playful. They love to joke and when they tease you, you'll know you're accepted. It's only when they're provoked, that you'll see their fierce side. When tempers flare, other badgerfolk will remove little ones and non-badgerfolk from the area for their protection.   It is true that badgerkin can be stubborn, but this also means they are determined and focused on whatever their task is. But on the flip-side, they tend to be generous with their time and money. Time is usually the more precious commodity.   Most badgerfolk are strongly introverted. They're often quiet and don't bring much attention to themselves, unless the situation calls for it. For example, sports fans are loud and boisterous at games!

Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Badger is their preferred language and English is the common tongue for most badgerkin. But they adapt fairly quickly to the language being spoken where they live. Perhaps this is because they choose to use fewer words than many other sapient species, especially humans.

Codes and Values

Family first, then friends
A badgerkin protects the family (and then friends) over any other group.
Loyalty
It runs strong among this folk, whether it be to the crown, their employer, their family, or friends.
Found family (from any species)
This is common among badger folk. Though they often adopt another forest creature, since that's the folk they most commonly come by. If they take a liking to someone, they'll accept them with the same hearty welcome and loyalty they would give blood kin.
Play to bond
Badgers love to play and tease. If you can't deal with some friendly ribbing or share self-deprecating humor, then you're not humble enough.
Caring for your tools
Without them, you'd have no living, hobbies, or anything else you do. Take care of the things that help take care of you financially, spiritually, and emotionally.

For kith and kin!
— a common Badgerfolk saying

Etiquette

Quiet and alone time
Certain places and times, one just remains quiet out of respect for others. On the train, if someone has their room or office door shut, etc. Pay attention to the atmosphere. If others are quiet, you should be, too.
Don't cause trouble for others
Be polite, think of others. Things like cutting in line will get you swiftly shoved out of the way. If you need to do something that would be an inconvenience to others, be sure you apologise before you attempt it. (So if your friend is ahead in line and you want to join, apologize to those behind you.)

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Food
To prepare food is highly respected. Badgerfolk clans enjoy gathering (all who are available at the time) and cooking together. It doesn't have to be fancy, just satisfying.
Art
Being creative is encouraged and celebrated. It helps keep the mind sharp and one's spirits up. Carving, painting, knitting, nalbinding, model painting, and sculpture are common badgerkin craft and art forms.
Workplace dirt is ok! (At least, until you get home...)
Many badgerkin work underground and in messier environments. (Think mining!) It's totally acceptable to be seen with a dirty work uniform. But once you get home, you wash up and change to clean, comfy clothes! Home is the center of badgerfolk society and kept tidy and ready for anyone who needs to rest. The sentiment about home is similar to the Danish ideal of hygge.
Grudges are generational
A grudge will be against a particular badgerkin and not the rest of their family, but it often results in the same thing as a grudge against the whole family, until amends are made. Amends are usually made publicly at the AllThing.
Made to fight?
It is thought that badgerfolk are ideal soldiers. They're loyal, brave, tenacious, and excellent fighters. Though, badgerkin prefer peace.

Customs, Traditions, and Ideals

Rites

Birth and First Year
Badgerfolk in the past have had a high infant mortality rate. But that's improving with modern medicine now being offered to werebeast and animal folk species in every protectorate. Births are always a happy occasion and cubs are given a "milk name". But the first birthday is the bigger celebration, where cubs are given a name that suits their personality.
Coming of age
This is probably the most animated and wild celebration in a badgerkin's lifetime. At the first day of summer, all the badgerfolk who turned 17 (legal adult and drinking age for the species) that year gather at a camp outside of town and have a raucous bonfire party. They generally return after a few days, though some will stay a little longer to revel in their new adult status. (There's always a group of babies born 6-9 months later.)
Funerary and memorial customs
Badgerkin believe their people originated from the soil, so deep in the soil in an underground cemetery burrow is where the dead are lovingly placed. Families keep pictures of their kin and small tokens they were given by them on the walls of their homes.

Beauty and Style Ideals

Badgerkin don't generally dress very flashy. They prefer muted, neutral, or soft pastel tones. They may sport piercings, usually in the form of earrings. Keeping themselves clean and well groomed (unless at or returning from work) is important.

Courtship Traditions

They tend to have large networks of friends. Courtship will most often start from within that circle. One badgerfolk will ask another if they'd consider getting to know each other better. If they hit it off, courting will begin, shortly followed by telling their families. It's rare for a family to reject a potential mate or mates. But if they do, the families won't be on speaking terms anymore.

Relationships

Bonds formed with friends and family run deep and are the most important relationships in a badgerkin's life. If one takes a mate it's expected to be for life. So badgerfolk make sure they know the character (plusses and defects) before they take a mate or mates. (Children may be born before the badgerkin opts to take a mate and the children they have may not be from that mate or mates. See note in coming of age rites.)   To take a mate is to become a lifelong, equal partner. It's the point a badgerfolk is ready to settle down and focus on family. Separation (the equivalent of divorce) is rare, and will likely cause the families of each side to not be on speaking terms unless amends (though, not the renewal of the relationship) are made.

Overview

Badgerfolk are a quiet, humble, playful people that value their friends and family first. Though watch out for their grudges and be ready to make amends if you offend!

Origins

It is believed that badgerkin came from a similar dimension to ours. They appeared at about the same time as the rabbitfolk did and it coincides with the point that The Iron Tome reawakened. Though, because of their humble and quiet nature, they are not as well known as the rabbitfolk.   Librarians from House Meles have interviewed many of the known badgerkin. But the interviewees say they have no memory of arriving here, just darkness and running, then relative safety. It is possible that they just don't wish to speak more of it, if they do remember. Some have been witnessed shuddering after being asked about their sudden appearance in the Tomeverse. Rumors say they fled from a collapsing world.   The known population is estimated to be only about a quarter of a million badgerfolk in the world. But their population is slowly and steadily growing.   They accept the authority of the House Meles monarchy (or whichever protectorate they live in) and have made simple, comfortable lives in the Tomeverse.
