Lapin Military Trainer
A Lapin military trainer is usually a volunteer from the House Lapin Armed Forces who trains soldiers, sailors, airmen, militia, or officers in these trades. Trainers tend to be career officers or NCOs in the Lapin Forces. They are especially notable because of the unique challenges of their particular profession.
First, specialty training is required for each branch of the Armed Forces. This is no different from any other military but it makes the other requirements more complex.
Second, most trainers must discharge at least part of their duties by training the Lapin Militia. This involves training common citizens, many of whom had never handled a rifle in their lives prior to The First Word War, for basic community defense against Zombies.
Third, Lapin military trainers must contend with adapting to the chaos induced by the presence of magic. The Lapin Forces are expected to operate in close integration with Tome Knights, and must prepare themselves to help repel supernatural, as well as natural, threats.
Finally, especially among Lapin instructors at OCS, trainers must instruct Literomancers in military science and the art of command. Not only do most literomancers come from artistic, rather than military backgrounds, but they also tend to be willful and free-spirited. They often do not think of combat situations in a militaristic sense, require considerable physical training, and tend to chafe against the strict military structure.
Unique Challenges
Military trainers in the Lapin Forces are especially respected because their job is difficult and complicated.Career
Qualifications
Requirements for instructing militia and enlisted personnel differ slightly from requirements for instructing at OCS:
Complete their own basic training and advanced trade training
Hold a specific rank (Non-Commissioned Officer or Officer) with several years of field experience
Complete internal military instructor courses (such as instructional techniques, range safety officer, and drill instruction)
Pass rigorous physical fitness tests and background/security checks
Instructors must hold a senior rank (e.g., Captain, Major, or equivalent), possess extensive field experience, and have graduated from advanced military schools, such as the Command and Staff College at the Lapin Royal Military Academy, or Maneuver Captain’s Career Course
The Lapin military utilizes specialized Training Development Officers or Personnel Selection Officers to directly manage and teach officer leadership and behavioral science courses
Day-to-day management and hands-on training are conducted by Staff Non-Commissioned Officers and drill instructors who have proven their physical fitness and leadership abilities
Most academic instructors require at least a Bachelor's degree in Education. For specialized subjects taught at institutions like the Canadian Coast Guard College or the Lapin Royal Military Academy, advanced academic or technical degrees are necessary
Relevant civilian equivalents of military skills, such as Wilderness First Responder certifications, National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) credentials, or firearms licensing
Proper insurance, facility permits, and registered business incorporation
Expertise in key Basic Military Training pillars
Bodyweight conditioning, rucking, and obstacle course navigation
Shelter building, land navigation, and camouflage
Basic triage and CPR techniques
Demonstrated experience in teaching teamwork, formations, and situational command
It is not a requirement, but is considered an asset, if would-be instructors have at least some experience in active service alongside Tome Knights.
Basic Military Training
To teach militia and recruits, an instructor must:Officer's Training
To teach at an Officer Candidate School (OCS), a would-be instructor must possess an active commission, a bachelor’s degree, and an exemplary service record. Instructors are usually senior commissioned officers and experienced Drill Sergeants selected for top-tier leadership and instructional abilities. Specific qualifications and selection criteria can be broken down by branch and role:Additional Training
The Lapin Forces, to allay demand, also utilize civilian instructors when possible to teach military skills, physical preparedness, or survival tactics, especially when training their militia. To qualify, an instructor requires:It is not a requirement, but is considered an asset, if would-be instructors have at least some experience in active service alongside Tome Knights.
Listen... gernades and airstrikes exploding around you is bad enough... now when it's stars exploding around you...
Career Progression
Rank is the greatest indicator of advancement in any military field, and instruction of trainees is no exception. However, semi-permanent or permanent positions as trainers are often assumed by aging soldiers, sailors and airmen who prefer to maintain active service to retirement, or combat troops on the wounded or disabled list.
Payment & Reimbursement
Payment is, like most other work in the Lapin Armed Forces, adjudicated according to rank. Bonuses may be available if the instructor signs up for extra time.
Civilian instructors who assist with training are extremely well-compensated, with pay rates tending to somewhere between 110% to 125% of similar experts who are not working with the Armed Forces.
Working with the military, even in peacetime, is dangerous, doubly so if you add literomancers in the mix. People deserve extra compensation for that, and probably wouldn't do it without it.
Other Benefits
While the general public is usually unaware of the importance of, and guts required for, becoming a Lapin military trainer, the Service is. Well-known instructors are highly respected among their military peers.
So you actually ran the Queen through Basic, eh? No shit!
