Lake Okanagan

Lake Okanagan is a large lake in the interior of British Columbia, Lapin Protectorate. It is the defining geographic feature of Okanagan City, the Lapin capitol. Lake Okanagan has long been a popular destination for tourists around the world, who come for the spectacular scenery and pleasant climate.

Geography

Okanagan Lake is a large glacial lake left over from the last Ice Age. It is the defining feature of the Okanagan Valley, and every major community in the area touches on its shores.

Ecosystem

The lake is large enough to generate its own microclimate. It transforms the Okanagan Valley from the desert that it is surrounded by in the inland of British Columbia into a semi-desert with a Mediterranean-like climate and views. This leads to mild winters and hot summers that are occasionally spoiled by wildfires, but ideal growing conditions for grapes and other fruits, including apples, cherries, and peaches.

Fauna & Flora

Local flora includes ponderosa pine, sagebrush, willows, hawthorn, wild rose, currants, and Saskatoon berries, and the area has been planted with extensive vineyards and orchards. Fauna includes jackrabbits, deer, redwinged blackbirds, and a variety of raptor species. The lake also features some rainbow trout, carp, and minnows, and freshwater oysters.   However, according to local legend, Okanagan Lake is also home to a lake monster of the sort that would be familiar to the residents of Loch Ness. Called the Ogopogo, it is said to be a sinewy lake serpent that is elusive to would-be cryptid hunters. Most people dismiss this idea as a cute local story or a childish fantasy.   It is not. Ogopogo is a lake Dragon, and since AttorraRu moved into the area, they have become quite friendly.

Natural Resources

Once primarily known for its lumber, the major resources in the Okanagan Valley now center around ranching, orchards, vineyards, and opal mining.
