Sun Flower
A Sun Flower is a botanical Literomantic technology developed by Princess Rowean. It was created through Vivimancy from a jumbo sunflower, which has been magically engineered to radiate a combination of electromagnetic frequencies that imitate natural sunlight, including visible light, ultraviolet radiation, and other valuable wavelengths. Originally intended to provide a pleasing sunlight glow to the Princess' personal quarters, and nurture her plants so they would grow underground, it has since become a foundational technology to the function of the House Lapin arcology and El-Ahrairah's Garden.
Description
Sun Flowers are giant sunflowers that radiate sunlight from the flower portion of the plant. Sun Flower seeds also emit a sunlit glow once ripened, which was necessary in order to not impair the plant's function while it reproduced.Mechanics & Inner Workings
Sun Flowers cannot provide sunlight forever. They must be fed with either natural sunlight, solar panels or Literomantic Batteries, like any other plant. Without this, the plants do not have enough energy to produce their unique bioluminscence, and may wilt.
History
Sun Flowers were one of the Bunny Princess' early experiments in Greenweaving. Needing a means of providing nourishment to her plants in the underground confines of The Warren, she drew upon the principles of sympathetic magic and The Law of Similarity to engineer a solution.
She began engineering bioluminescent bacteria by repeatedly breeding them, with literomantic aid, until they produced light of the correct spectrum. Fortunately, bacteria reproduce quickly, so this only required a year of ongoing work.
She then spliced that light-making genome into the sunflowers, and continued to make tweaks from there until the plant naturally radiated "sunlight" from its flowers.
Significance
Sun Flowers supplement UV and sun lamps to illuminate the crops in El-Ahrairah's Garden. This combination keeps the energy maintenance costs low. If necessary, its needs can be maintained for several days by running a single generator on a single tank of gasoline.
