Literomantic Batteries

Literomantic batteries are pieces of MagiTech that store the energy of Literomancy. They generally are made with a crystalline core, and may or may not include a steel casing to limit the amount of "magical evaporation" that occurs over time and/or a lining of Meteoric Iron as an enhancer. The most notable manufacturer of Literomantic batteries was Senna Nightshade, who developed the technoarcanology to have a loss of less than 0.5% over the course of a year.

Portal Batteries

Portal batteries are Literomantic batteries that have been specifically made to power a teleportation portal such as the Transcontinental Portal formerly found only at Aldergrove and Mount Mitchell, but now found in a handful of important locations across the globe. These batteries are made to be long-lasting, but store relatively small amounts of Literomantic energy comparative to their size.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Batteries to store literomantic energy are most commonly created from the quartz family of minerals, such as the many varieties of quartz, herkimer diamonds, amethyst, and citrine, due to their relative availability and hardness. Batteries have also been created from true diamonds, and corundum gems such as ruby or sapphire, but being rare, precious stones, this is considerably more expensive, and therefore, far less common. According to rumour, Senna Nightshade and Queen Sable Aradia were experimenting with the use of manufactured diamonds and silicone crystals (and thus, computer components) at the time of the Panda Polemarch's disappearance.   Literomantic power is stored within the crystal through the use of runes, ink magic, or other forms of literomancy.   The remainder of the components are then either concerned with preventing the stored Werds from "leaking," or conducting the stored energy to be used for other purposes. The earliest prototype batteries used lead, which is a traditional magical buffer, as a casing, but later models employed aluminum (which is both much lighter, and safer to use, than lead) or even stainless steel for the same purpose. Preferred conductors include gold, silver, copper, and meteoric iron, which directs the energy where it needs to go (such as powering a portal).

History

Using crystals to store magical energy is a technique that has been known to literomancers for hundreds, if not thousands of years. This technique filtered into the popular consciousness with the advent of the New Age Movement and the rise of computer technology in the 1970s.   However, with the reawakening of literomancy after 2020, a means was required to make this process more efficient, especially since much larger amounts of literomantic energy were being utilized, and the natural "leakage" of such energy needed to be minimized. Senna Nightshade perfected a blend of magic and technology that combined crystals of almost perfect purity with alloys known to effectively conduct, or buffer, energy in turn. This particular MagiTech was a key component in the construction of Transcontinental Portals.   The MagiTech was feared to have been lost when Senna Nightshade disappeared in early 2025, but recently, it has been discovered that she left complete copies of her notes to the Woodland Family Alliance, so her work can at least be imitated. House Ailurus may have more advanced notes that might lead someone to develop even more advanced MagiTech from projects in the experimental stage, but if so, they haven't confirmed it yet.

Significance

Most permanent literomantic structures involve the use of literomantic batteries in one way or another, and they have become essential to Woodlander and Sauropodan infrastructure.

Storage of Specific Powers

Literomantic batteries have been found capable of storing the Literomantic abilities of specific people for later usage. This storage method is not generally recommended, as to use the power stored within the battery, the battery must be destroyed.
