The Totally Bat Squad

The Totally Bat Squad

Knightwing Sir Von Icicle of House Chiroptera has a formation of penguins "totally bats" that he helped free from Taronga Zoo (and their 'slavers in short shorts').

Watch Sir Von Icicle's Diary: Not Escaped Penguins

The 20 sub-bodyguards under Sir Von Icicle include penguins dressed up as "bats" (wombats, numbats, etc). Although they are most often known as 'The Totally Bat Squad' this has only ever been one of their potential titles. Others include 'The Bat Squad', 'Not Penguins' and many others.

They are quite mischievous and like to fly around (via zip lines in the Cavern). They have even organised a Cavern wide hide-and-seek for Chiroptera before!

The Five of Most Notes

The following five squad members are the most prominent of the Totally Bat Squad and have limited literomantic ability (based on Sir Von Icicle's abilities). They are the most widely seen (and heard!) throughout the Caverns of the squad. Notably, with Sir Von Icicle, they amass sticky notes (often referred to as 'stickies') to use for their literomancy, writing on and shaping individual stickies, or creating larger objects with multiple stickies (e.g. shields in wartime, and a failed attempt at creating Queen Tara's throne).

They Take Their Duties Seriously

The main duties of The Bat Squad are to protect the Cavern, the Queen and its citizenry. However, this is not only meant in terms of physical protection. Most notably, they protect the minds of Tome Knights and take part in the creative balance of the world, jumping in to share lightheartedness and laughter between times of darker themes.
The Bat Squad take direct orders from Sir Von Icicle, especially in times of war. This was particularly of note in The Battle of Crystal Song where they were on the frontlines protecting the Cavern, their Queen and the Living. At other times, they may also take orders from any of the Chiropteran leadership, the Knightwings and the Head Librarian. How effective they are at following these orders is an entirely different story. As they don't have a human form to turn into, they make up for their lack of hands in many creative ways.

Although the squad often embody the fun of the Chaos Cartel at times, they are more aligned with the Self Care Mafia. In particular, they follow after Sir Von Icicle to feed Queen Tara and ensure she keeps as well as she can. Reminding her that good self care earns her badges (shinies!) is sometimes enough to encourage her to not fly away.

They themselves often go in shifts and will either play with other Chiropterans or nap with Bat Cat, making sure that someone keeps the Cavern running smoothly.

Make sure Squish doesn't see this bit.

They Play with Stickynotes a Lot

Whenever someone steps into the Cavern, at least one squad member will check for any pockets and contents thereof. Although this is usually seen as part of the security protocol, the squad will make sure as many pockets as possible will be filled with sticky notes. Over the duration of a visitor's stay, their pockets of sticky notes will lighten as the Bat Squad uses those sticky notes for either literomantic purposes, or simply to leave encouraging messages for you to see.
The filling of pockets is not just limited to visitors. Every pocket in the Cavern has been filled and emptied of stickies, so much so that it has moved from a strange thing, to commonplace, to influencing children's games and fashion. Anyone wanting to have a Literomancer-approved fashion line label in the Chiropteran protectorate know that having pockets is a must, and the more the better.
It's great the Queen worked out a deal with Officeworks. We don't have to have "expense training" anymore.

Below is the filk of their importance in the Battle of Crystal Song when Chiroptera was fighting with all the Living for The Iron Tome:
It Must Have Been Stickies
by TFB
It must have been a pink
With Queen Sable's healing
A flower lights up bright
Healing someone's sight
It must have been a pink
They say our inks have real cool buffs
The bats and friends created them
Our team writes them on post it notes
And slaps them to your knees

Wombat brings the healing buffs
Knowing where to slap the stuff
Mousebats buffs bolster your defence
Jumping on your toe
Woh oh oh
    Possumbat has exaggerate
to increase a Tome Knight’s power
Literomancy
We will run around
Giving buffs out to the Living
Find the crevices between socks and leg

It must have been a green
King Bob has roared a scream
Squishing Undead
His sound is increased
It must have been a green
Gary has one for the Undead to succumb
To make them nervous, give them debuffs
A blue, for confusion
Slap em on
Numbat will give focus
To those in his reach
Help defeat your foes
Sir Icicle
He waddles on through
Giving buffs to you
  It must have been orange
Giving extended reach
An extra 5 feet
Take down more zombies
It must have been orange

As the battle slowly seeps into the Cavern
We gotta use our sekret sneaky skills
To run around and help, the Living
To give out all the buffs!
Give out all the buffs!
Sir Icicle said to let it go when someone stole
My sticky notes
Living will win
Undead will fall
We should keep writing
As war goes on
Good thing Phyreball carved out the sekret sneaky spaces big enough for us!

  We were never captive penguins
animal bats essentially
At least that's what we'll say
as we buff you!
Our buff distractions with Phyreball’s contraptions!
Our buff distractions with Phyreball’s contraptions!
Our buff distractions with Phyreball’s contraptions!
Buff! Buff! Buff! Buff!
Sing it out, Bat Squad
We'll stick to you Tome Knights
(Our buff distractions With Phyreball’s contraptions!)
For everyone!
(Our buff distractions with Phyreball’s contraptions!)
  It must have been navy
There’s damage coming in
But navy gives a shield
Resistance given
It must have been navy
As the night became suddenly brighter
We know that there has been some fighting
And we’ll run through your legs,
What doing? Sticking stickies
  It must have been navy
(Our buff distractions with Phyreball’s contraptions!)
Buff Buff Buff Buff
It must have been orange
Yeah
(Our buff distractions with Phyreball’s contraptions!)
It must have been a green
(Our buff distractions with Phyreball’s contraptions!)
And there
It must have been a pink

And remember to always wear pockets when visiting!

Does the Queen know about our pocket exchange experimental facilities?
