What is the Self Care Mafia?

A group of former yakuza turning the world of writers and creators around, giving them some serious encouragement to take care of themselves in the Game of Tomes. We're good yakuza now!

What We Do

Loudly encourage Game of Tomes participants to put self care as a priority, especially during Game of Tomes and Tourney of Tales. The NanoWriMo events are wonderful and challenging. We don't want people to break themselves or burn out in order to accomplish lofty goals.

Give out specialized Gold Stars for outstanding self care. You never know where you'll see us. Remember we're watching! (Nov. 2023, the SCM gave all Tome Knights the right to give out gold stars.)

New for April Tourney of Tales 2022: Black Market Popup Shops where you can show us you did a number of self care tasks, that can in turn be used as 'currency' to earn special collectable badges.

How do I join?

  Join GoT Discord Server and pick up the Member role (for more server access) and the Self Care Mafia Member role in #role-selection to enter the #self-care-mafia channel and keep up with the clan chatter and plotting. 

History

The Self Care Mafia was the brainchild of ShyRedFox and her Kobun protector FoxWriter and was revealed to the world during Game of Tomes, November 2021. They formed the mafia and allowed members from all houses to join in on badgering GoT participants into taking care of themselves.

No more of this 'I burnt out' or 'I hurt myself' during NaNoWriMo as a badge of honor. It's not an honor, and we'll call you on it!

February 26, 2022, Minor House Leader Shyredfox shocked the GoT community with the following announcement.

Minor House Kitsune shall dissolve and descend into the chaos of what we always really were - sneaky yakuza. But we'll use our former bad ways to bring good as the Self Care Mafia.

It was a hard choice. But Fox felt the health needs of the writing community were paramount. Watch for a video announcement in April.

Tourney of Tales April 2023

The Self Care Mafia and the Chaos Cartel have joined forces to maximize self care, chaos, and encouragement. And it is the 1-year anniversary of the Black Market. To celebrate the occasions, we created the Glitter Bomb badge and the !glitter command for the GoTverse Discord. Use this new power with responsibility to spread the fun!

Chiroptera is generally supportive of the message of the Mafia, but the Mafiosos have a distinct problem with the Knightwing known as Mr. Big T Anderson, or "The Mad Batter" who not only ignores them blatantly, but tells them to piss off.

A prominent Meles, Brocktree ShyRedFox , is suspected of being the leader of the Self Care Mafia. As a result, Meles tends to be strongly supportive of the Mafia's agenda.

Mollusca is not known for getting involved in criminal syndicates. However, they tend to be pretty good at self care for the most part, so the Mafiosos have no problems with them.

The Self-Care Mafia ↔ Sauropoda

For the most part, Sauropoda and the Mafiosos ignore each other, but they don't have any particular problems with each other. Sauropoda appreciates the Mafia's message and tends to be pretty good at their own self care, so they don't tend to run into conflicts.

The Self-Care Mafia ↔ Ailurus

For the most part, the SCM and Ailurus get along pretty well. Their main points of dispute are that Ailurus, being heavily neurodiverse, has differing opinions than the Mafia sometimes about what constitutes self-care, but for the most part, they agree self-care is important, and have no problems with the message the Mafia is delivering, Aside from occasionally having to lean on the Panda Polemarch and the Archon about sleeping more, the Mafia is pretty happy with Ailurus, too. Since Feral Foxx is suspected of being a Mafioso, this has also helped to build relations.

The Regent of Avis is suspected of being a member of the Self Care Mafia. As a result, Avis tends to be strongly supportive of the Mafia's agenda - which works for them.

The relationship between the two major criminal syndicates is... complex. On one hand, the leaders and members of both groups genuinely like each other. They tend to band together to deal with the threat of the Horde (or, the undead members tend to band together for the good of the Horde). They both recognize the need for each other's existence and the good they both do, and sometimes, are even allies. BUT... would the Chaos Cartel please just settle the filk down once in a while? And would the Mafia kindly untwist their panties?

The Self-Care Mafia ↔ Lapin

Feelings between Lapin and the Mafia have traditionally been tense. Since Prinx Tempest is suspected of being the head of the Chaos Cartel, Lapin has been involved in an ongoing rivalry with suspected Mafiosos ShyRedFox and Foxx. Several of the Lapin House Scions, including the Mother of Bunnies, have been firmly on the Mafia's watchlist for some time. However, relations have recently improved considerably, in part, due to suspected Mafioso Flubb joining the Owsla, and in part due to a demonstrated desire to do better by the Bunny Queen and the Prinx. This is a point of great relief to Princesses Sunny and Rowean who are suspected Mafiosos.
