Sir Nova Firan, WRS

Nova Moonlight is a Werecat shifter serving as House Librarian and Feral for House Ailurus. She is best known for her Elemental Air Literomancy used during The Battle of Crystal Song.
"You'd think, with me being the Feral Librarian, that y'all had to lure me out of the wild with pastry and books."
"Didn't we, though?"
~ a conversation overheard at Ink & Tea Cafe and Shop

Early Life

Nova was born in the pre-Word War state of Georgia. Much of her family of origin didn't know what to do with her, but she had two mentors who guided her.   As a child, Nova hid in her grandfather's plum and peach trees so she could watch him work in his garden. Once he returned to the house, she followed in his footsteps to pick strawberries from his garden, unaware he was watching her the entire time. After he finished scolding her, her grandfather taught her how to best care for the plants in the garden.   Much of what he taught her, Nova later applied in learning the skills required to work with the Power Plant. In addition to his teachings, Nova's aunt Hibi expanded this knowledge into flowering plants and trees.   As they have both since died, Nova continues this work as their legacy, despite it not being the aspect of her Literomancy she is strongest with.    During the summers, her immediate family traveled into the Smoky Mountains to visit her maternal grandmother's relatives, who lived among a commune of storytellers and moonshiners. In her early memories, her relatives claimed they would kidnap her, but these claims stopped early in Nova's adolescence. She spent years searching for answers to no avail.   Nova was always aware of her "cat," but they didn't make themself apparent until she was a teenager. The first indication this wasn't an extension of her overactive imagination was the appearance of the cat ears. They were a blessing and a curse, as they helped mitigate the hearing impairment she was struggling with while leaving her susceptible to overstimulation. She still isn't sure why she was the only one who could see them.   Another fanciful idea Nova had as a child was her belief she could talk to the wind. She was content with the idea of it being something she made up until she talked a tornado out of targeting part of her neighborhood. She still believed this to be a figment of her imagination until the events of Word War IV.    Overall, Nova was a solitary child who found more solace in wild spaces than she did in other people.    Sometimes on clear nights, she would sit in the branches of her favorite oak tree and talk to the stars.

Word War IV

Nova joined the Tome Knights late during the previous April Tourney. After following the Pandas back to Penwall, she focused on getting her bearings in this new world she had thrown herself into. Once the call went out for volunteers to go to The Cavern, she threw herself in with both feet.    Early during The 50K Team Up, Nova heard the Nite Qween's laughter during a moment of crisis, and the most terrifying part was how familiar it was. She pushed past the unsettling experience to help her team succeed, receiving a protective buff that discharged during the Battle of the Tunnels.   The way the buff interacted with her Literomancy called into doubt Nova's belief that her ability to control the wind was something she made up, as she created her first wind wall to put distance between herself and the Zombie attacking her.    Once she arrived safely in Zafforza City, Nova tested the ability to make certain it was something she could replicate when not under duress. Once The Rave Train arrived, she offered her abilities to the leadership as a resource they could utilize.    The wind wall was first used in the strategic retreat to the Cavern at the end of The Battle of Zafforza City  As she waited for the War Council to decide what their next move should be, Nova experienced another episode similar to the one at the beginning of the war. While she struggled through this, Nova discovered her ring had been contaminated by the corrupted glitter the Horde was using as one of their primary weapons.   Nova removed the ring to contain the glitter, but the effects lingered. During the spiral into doubt and indecision, she heard the sound of music coming from the library. When she followed it into the Library, she found The Bard with Many Names singing and playing his guitar.   What followed was the deepening of a friendship through a conversation about finding hope in the darkness and something to look forward to if she survived.    During the battle that followed, Nova fought at Archon Myko's side. She spun the corrupted glitter into a tornado and sent it back at them.

2024 Tourneys at the Caverns

After the Meles Ailurus Treaty of 2024 was finalized, Nova went home to Des Moines to visit her sister. This trip took her through the former Meles territory, where much of the power generation came from wind power. This reawakened Nova's interest in renewable energy and reminded her of the conversations she'd overheard about moving the Realm toward more sustainable energy solutions.   Shortly afterward, Nova's dreams started centering around the Power Plant. When she spoke to Myko about these dreams, the Archon connected her with Princess Rowean, the creator of the Power Plant. After a series of meetings, they decided on a test site at Spirit Lake (Okoboji), located on the Meles/Ailurus northern border.   Nova spent April's Tourney working to master these skills, so she spent little time at the Tourney grounds until July.   She spent July nurturing the friendships she made during the last war while forging new ones.   During the time she spent with Bard, Nova recognized there was something wrong. She tried to care for him in the ways she could, especially given the promise she made to Myko not to pry.   Nova was already in love with him but wouldn't acknowledge those feelings until later.   She traveled to The Warren for a conversation with Queen Sable. Nova left with the sense that they shared some commonalities she wished she didn't have to share with anyone.   It was at this July tourney that she first showed signs of being able to fly, a skill she is still working to improve on. She also went into full cat shape under duress. Few outside of those present at the first shapechange have seen her cat form.
"I would follow you anywhere. But not yet. Not now."

Word War V

At the beginning of the war, Nova accepted the deal with the caveat she would remain behind in Penwall to protect Archon and House.   Nova didn't need to make the deal to know she would go to him when he called. Therefore, when he reached out to her during the fall of Penwall, she went willingly into the #undeadfolkband.   She (as Vega) was present at The Undead Karaoke Night and may have been exhibiting early signs of The Filking Plague at the time.

Post-War and the 2025 Tourneys of Tales

After the war, Nova had more trouble than she expected readjusting to being among the Living. Her undead self remains a presence at the back of her mind. Her grief over Myko is a quiet thing she doesn't speak of much. Instead, she takes time to regularly visit and maintain the flame at the Temple of All Deities in Penwall.   Near Tomesmas, Nova put together a series of letters and gifts to the people who touched her. As much as it was a need driving her to make sure those close to her knew it, this act also helped ground her in the world.   With Bard's gift, Nova also left the coat she borrowed from his closet and wore until shortly before Penwall fell.   Afterward, she isolated herself from even the rest of the Pandas. She experienced a regression in her understanding of social situations, which her self-imposed isolation only worsened. In addition, Nova's insecurities about whether she is trying to force her friendship on people resurfaced.   Only halfway through the Tourney did she pull herself out of the worst of this spiral. Aspects of it continue to be something she's working through.   During this period, Nova finally told Bard she was in love with him in a roundabout, Nova-type way. Kisses were shared, promises were made. The promise to never pry was finally made to the right person.   At Midsummer, Nova accepted the role of House Librarian. Her first official act was to perform the Coronation of Bard as Archon, HappyHappySad as Seneschal, and Fairy GoT Mother as Heir.   When Regent Dazzlinkat invited people along for a game of bowling, Nova went along. She bowled while negotiations for Claw Summit's Fudge Festival and Treaty were ongoing, but she made notes for later. She may have been the one to ask for the peach grove that now grows near the heart of Penwall.

Physical Description

Body Features

Nova is approximately 5'4" and considers herself to be chubby, or maybe curvy on a good day. In both human shape and cat shape, she weighs approximately 250 lbs.   She injured her left shoulder in a car accident when she was in her teens, and it never healed correctly. During her childhood, Nova broke her left ankle, and it has been weaker than her right one since.   In the first Bodyguard Boot Camp she attended before joining the Ferals, she had to sit out part of the event because her bad ankle refused to cooperate.

Physical quirks

Nova was born with a hearing impairment, which makes it difficult to hear people in crowded spaces unless they speak in certain registers. This is the primary reason she believes her cat side came forward as soon as they did, despite the absence of Literomancy in the world.   Sometimes, even with the cat ears, she experiences intermittent episodes of tinnitus that she describes as being punched in the side of the head. For this reason, modified signals were developed to let the other Ferals know she's having issues when in meetings or while on guard duty.   Nova does everything literomantic with her left hand primarily, as she was far too stubborn as a child to fully switch to the right hand even when pushed. The exception is her bow. As her right side is physically stronger, she pulls the bowstring with that hand. She's been learning how to sword fight ambidextrously.

Special abilities

Elemental Magic:
Nova is primarily known for her Elemental Air Literomancy. With it, she forms body armor and the wind walls she became known for during Word War IV. She can also read and manipulate weather patterns; however, she rarely uses this aspect to avoid impacting the climate. While she's showing some aptitude for flight, this talent is a recent discovery. As such, Nova has little stamina. When she uses this ability for extended periods, she is susceptible to Magic Drain.   The Elemental Earth Literomancy she learned in her youth came less easily to her. However, working with Rowean on the Powerplant project has re-awakened and expanded the ability. Prior to that, she knew only that plants grew better when she sang to them.
Empathy/Foresight:
Long before Nova discovered her literomancy, she had prophetic dreams. Occasionally the details linger after waking. However, mostly she retains nothing but a vague feeling she is compelled to act upon. Becoming a Tome Knight only strengthened these dreams and is one of the reasons sleep doesn't come easy these days.   Nova has been aware of other people's emotions for as long as she can remember. This awareness fed into the people-pleasing tendencies she used to keep herself safe during her youth. She has since come to view it as an invasion of other people's privacy and has built walls to keep that awareness to a minimum.   Her empathy is built into much of the literomancy she performs.   She burned herself out as a teen when her mother took advantage of both traits. She has become very selective about who she says yes to since then.   Since childhood, Nova has been sensitive to oncoming death. She has received visitations from multiple family members before they passed beyond the Veil.
Shapeshifting
Nova shapeshifts into a Florida panther, a smaller variant of the more common mountain lion. The cat ears are a near-permanent fixture unless she's trying to provide people privacy for conversations she wouldn't otherwise be able to hear. Full shifts are relatively rare for Nova and occur only under duress or when she is in the presence of people she trusts.   More recent shifts have revealed signs of having a striping pattern reminiscent of that seen on red pandas.

Apparel & Accessories

Around Penwall, Nova has a couple of distinct styles. She runs around in tank tops and cargo shorts when the weather is too hot for her typical corset. She wears her corsets with jeans and slacks, depending on her mood and the occasion. Finally, when it's too cool to justify either of the first two styles, she wears pullover sweaters with her jeans.   Despite her preference for casual attire, she will wear dresses and skirts for formal occasions.   While Nova would rather run around barefoot than have anything on her feet, there are a couple of styles of shoes she prefers when it's necessary. She has a collection of boots, made up of a combination of cute little ankle boots and more practical hiking boots.   One of her acquisitions at Retellings was a pair of platforms she's been running around Penwall in during the Woodlander tourneys. Another was the short-sleeved robe she wore to the Coronation ceremony at Midsummer.   She's promised herself she'll get one in every color.   The only jewelry she wears is the black ring she wears on a chain. The ring still glimmers with the glitter it was once infected with. She hasn't taken it off since reclaiming it during the Horde's trip to the Caverns during Word War V.

Specialized Equipment

The flute Bard gifted her is one of her most prized possessions. She continues finding new and creative ways of integrating it into her literomancy practice.   In addition, Nova has started collecting weaponry. Her collection currently includes a recurve bow named Hunter, an as-of-yet unnamed slingshot for testing experimental ammunition she's refining, a rapier, and a jian sword named Silver Rose her sister gifted her.

Mental characteristics

Accomplishments & Achievements

Nova participated in the 50k Team Up during her first war.   She was also part of the raising of the Eastern Seaboard, even though she wasn't able to contribute as much as she had initially planned.

  • Nova was between the ages of eight and twelve when her cousin Luana asked her to go into the space between the foundation and the lowest floor of her aunt Hibi's house after a misplaced item. Nova already would drop everything for those she cared for, so she agreed to go without question.   Once inside, the door slammed shut, engulfing her in darkness. When she heard the growling and scared whining of her aunt's teenage puppy, Nani, Nova realized she wasn't alone.   She called for help, fighting with the door and Nani both as she did so. The only answer she received was the sound of her cousin's laughter. Nova switched tactics, trying to get Nani to calm, since she accepted nobody would come to help them.   Instead, Nani lashed out at her.   Afterward, Nova huddled into herself and wrapped the darkness around her like a cloak for protection.   She isn't sure how she and Nani got out of the crawl space, but her next memory is sitting at her aunt's table, being pampered while she talked about it.   Ever since, Nova's been afraid of dogs, except for her aunt's beloved Nani.   There is a younger aspect of Nova that makes an appearance from time to time. She suspects they were the one to actually walk out of this.

  • Nova tried to run away from home as a preteen. She didn't get far.   Her friend's mother discovered her and took her back to their house. While her friend's mother was trying to contact Nova's parents, she escaped out into the backyard, trying to plan how she was going to get away again.   Before she got far, her friend's boyfriend discovered her. He thought it would be funny to force her to the back of the property, which bordered the creek running through the neighborhood. The creek ran at its shallowest point in this location, and the drop was long enough to guarantee severe injury if Nova fell.   The only thing that saved her was the intervention of her friend's two foster siblings. They were half Nova's age, armed with nothing more than sticks, but they distracted him long enough for her to get away. Her friend, meanwhile, stood there and watched it unfold.   This incident fed Nova's insecurities but also drove her to pay forward the gift her friend's foster siblings gave her that day. Much of the Starlight Brigade is made up of formerly unhoused youth who know the area far better than Nova does.   Nova suspects the memory of her friend's boyfriend's laughter is why she's so hypersensitive when she hears the Nite Monarq's laughter.

  • Nova was in a severe car accident in her late teens, where she rolled the SUV she was driving.   For this reason, Nova rarely drives and still experiences flashbacks behind the wheel. They're mild in comparison to some that she experiences but can still put her back in the moment more readily than she's comfortable with.   She doesn't drive much for this reason. Sometimes when she's stressed or the weather's about to change, the shoulder she dislocated in the accident aches.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Nova's primary motivaton is to be a light in the darkness.   This is something she says to her loved ones frequently.   Being able to help people has been her driving force for as long as she can remember.   Sometimes it's offering an embrace to a loved one who needs it. Sometimes it's offering her assistance in a search and rescue situation. Other times it's sitting beneath the Poet-ree at the Penwall Arts Academy and offering encouragement to those who seek her out.   Now that she's House Librarian, that last scenario happens just as frequently at Requiem Library.   No matter which location she's in, Nova makes sure those who need her know where to find her.   Beyond that, Nova is constantly driven to leave the world a little better than she found it. This is what drives her interest in renewable energy and why she's so determined to help with the Power Plant project.

Likes & Dislikes

Nova loves dancing barefoot during a thunderstorm, and on the rare occasions when it snows in Penwall, she's among the first out the door to build snow pandas.   She thrives in colder temperatures more than warmer ones and frequently has to be reminded to wear a coat.   Stargazing is one of her favorite pastimes, and she can happily follow a link spiral regarding any new facts related to astronomy.   Nova collects tarot decks, has drawn astrological charts for friends since she was a teenager, and has a set of Romulan runes she made at a science fiction convention she attended. When she is in need of guidance, she has a deck gifted her by her sister she draws from. She considers the Moon card to be the one she identifies with the most, though she jokingly calls herself the Fool.   She has a fascination with renewable energy, which drives her work with the Power Plant and the drive to see the turbines near Penwall properly prepared for winter.   She loves doing deep dives on folklore and mythologies, whether they be from larger cultures or what people wish to share about themselves.   Nova dislikes conflict, unnecessary cruelty, and unfairness. To a lesser extent, she also dislikes damp clothing against her skin, enclosed underground spaces, and the feeling of being trapped.

Vices & Personality flaws

Nova swings from overthinking to impulsivity, and it isn't always obvious when that swing will occur.   She finds accepting compliments or credit for things she's done difficult. Nova often fails to realize what she's done for people or her House has made a difference until it's pointed out to her. Even then, she doesn't quite believe it.   Nova frequently will jump in enthusiastically at any opportunity to help and, at times, be overwhelmed when she realizes she agreed to more than she can deliver.   At times, Nova tries not to take up space in the world. She frequently sees herself as clingy at best or a nuisance to those she cares for at worst. Sometimes she goes as far as perceiving her absence as being the solution to whatever situation has arisen.   She doesn't talk about it. Nova will just check that her loved ones are okay before slipping away.   The only problem is how much isolation makes these issues worse.   She occasionally uses self-deprecating comments to cover how vulnerable she feels.

Personality Quirks

If one word could be used to describe Nova's personality, it would be "bubbly."   Nova was reserved around strangers prior to joining House Ailurus. She felt she had to determine what version of herself was acceptable in any given situation until she realized her friends accepted her regardless.   After following the Pandas home to Penwall, Nova found herself growing increasingly more comfortable in her own skin. She's still frequently quiet but is becoming less guarded with time.   It doesn't feel so dangerous to let the wildness of her nature, which she spent years hiding, run free.   She is loyal to her core. Once she gives her heart to a person, there's a part of herself that remains theirs, no matter what happens.   When she makes promises, she will twist herself into knots to keep them.   She loves gifting her words and her time. She tries to remember the things those around her love best.   Nova is a little bit silly, far too serious for her own good, and thinks herself quite anachronistic at times. She can be a creature of extremes.

Social

Family Ties

Outside of her immediate family group, Nova has little knowledge of her background.   She views her literomancy as a wild talent with no connection to any House.

She will be proven wrong.   Her maternal grandfather is connected to House Meles. His family line once served as guards in some capacity, and the one place he found peace in the aftermath of his wartime experience was one of the House Meles orchards.   Before she met him, Nova's maternal grandmother was raised in an area known to be under House Sauropoda's protection, among a community of songwriters and storytellers.   As for Nova's father's side of the family, it's obvious there is some connection to literomancy. His eldest sister's talent with plants that she passed on to Nova suggests as much. However, the exact connection remains a mystery.

Religious Views

Nova is an eclectic pagan. Largely, her beliefs are cobbled together from any number of faiths that she explored when she was younger, and roughly once a decade, she reassesses and goes exploring again. She was once told that these periods of exploration are a vital aspect of her spiritual growth, and it has thus far turned out to be true.   That said, she does follow a particular deity and has since she was very young. For Nova, the Huntress is very much an aspect of the Goddess Diana, and she was called to follow Her before she hit puberty. There is an aspect of her wild nature that answers that Call, and she says that may be part of the reason why the first weapon she picked up was the bow.   As such, Nova's worship follows lunar cycles more closely than the traditional Wheel of the Year, though she does try to remember Tomesmas gifts for her friends and loved ones.

Social Aptitude

Nova can frequently keep up while in social situations. Yet there are times when she has a noted inability to read social cues.   When this happens, she watches those around her whose judgements she trusts to determine what the best way to react is. When even that fails her, she will outright ask her friends to help interpret for her.   Even at her most confident, Nova feels insecure and second-guesses after every conversation she's had whether she's accurately interpreted what was meant or responded 'correctly.'   Nova frequently feels exhausted by this constant analysis.   In addition, when Nova spends a lot of time with people, she picks up phrases her loved ones use or sometimes even an echo of their accent.   It's not deliberate, but she worries that those she cares for may think it is.

Hobbies & Pets

Nova has no pets, though she still misses her childhood cat, Tiger. The time Nova spends with Myko's cat currently fills that void.   When she has time, Nova plays darts and billiards at The Watching Dogs. She started playing to learn fine control over her Elemental Air literomancy. Now, she plays for the fun of it.   Nova isn't good at bowling, but she enjoys playing anyway and laughing at herself when she rolls gutter balls.   Her weak ankles make it difficult to ice skate, but she satisfies herself with watching ice hockey and good-naturedly bickering with Sable when the teams they support play each other.   She has been seen roller-skating through the streets of Penwall.   As many in House Ailurus seem to be, Nova enjoys baking. She loves giving baked goods as gifts and frequently before events will stay up all night baking so that those who need them have sustenance at the start.   Nova loves doing fiber arts. She primarily crochets, though she also knits, spins, and weaves. She's spent far too much money at Foxx's shop, buying spinning fiber and yarn with high glitter content.   She also nurtures plants. Nova mounted a lattice where she grows morning glories. Seeing them when she wakes in the morning makes her smile.   A small monstera plant lives on her desk, and a lucky bamboo stands guard by the door.

Speech

Nova is soft-spoken until she becomes excited. She doesn't realize how loud her voice becomes unless it's pointed out to her.   She swears frequently. Early attempts to curb the habit were ineffective. After years of failed attempts, Nova decided she didn't care what other people thought of her. She does try to keep it to a minimum in more formal settings.   Much of Nova's natural accent comes from Georgia, where she was raised. The amount of time she spent in the presence of her grandfather and his family had her picking up the Minnesotan accent as well.   She spent years hiding behind that accent and burying the Southern accent. It's only more recently that her Southern accent has made a stronger appearance.   Living at Penwall's new location brings it out of her as well.
