Tiki Drunkenness
Piña colada and margaritas are my favourite, personally. And they're Tiki staples, apparently... no shortage.Tiki Drunkenness is a condition that results from consuming the unique, Literomantically-charged "adult beverages" created by House Tiki during The Second Word War. The benefits are considerable for Tome Knights — they are imbued with the powers of the essence of their House motto. The drawbacks are... the drinker gets drunk.
Transmission & Vectors
There's only one way to acquire Tiki Drunkenness, and that is by drinking alcoholic cocktails acquired from a literomantically-charged Tiki Bar. Drinking the alcohol stored in the Tiki Bar is not sufficient — although it will, indeed, get you drunk, if that's what you're looking for. One must drink a proper tiki cocktail mixed from the source, up to and including whatever the proper glass or serving technique might be for the cocktail in question (ie. special glasses, paper umbrellas, slice of lime, salted glass edge, etc).
Causes
Alcohol has long-established intoxicating and psychoactive effects on the Human (and related species) body, and has been used for this purpose for at least 13,000 years. It is a Central Nervous System (CNS) depressant, decreasing electrical activity of neurons in the brain, which causes the characteristic effects of alcohol intoxication ("drunkenness").
However, the magically-charged nature of Tiki drinks also trigger unique magical effects in Literomancers, specifically Tome Knights and Tome Zombies, that causes them to manifest significant magical powers that relate to the nature of their House motto. Essentially, it manifests the implications of a House motto's innate Literomancy to its extremes.
Symptoms
Consuming alcohol can result in euphoria, decreased anxiety, increased sociability, sedation, and impairment of cognitive, memory, motor, and sensory function. Alcohol can have a variety of adverse effects. Short-term effects include generalized impairment of neurocognitive function, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and hangover.
All of these are innate risks and effects in Tiki drinks as well. However, the "magical symptoms" can often be extremely beneficial, leading to what may be, shall we say, less-than-healthy use by Tome Knights during Word Wars.
Regent Dazzlinkat of House Sauropoda developed the ability to transform into a hybrid form of the various Houses she served with during the Word Wars. This manifested itself in both the Second and Fifth Word Wars, in which she had regular access to a Tiki Bar. Sauropoda's motto is "Evolve!"
Queen Sable Aradia of House Lapin developed her lateral and self-described "fractal thinking" abilities to a superhuman extreme when she had regular access to a Tiki Bar during the Fifth Word War. As a result, she seemed to be able to anticipate the moves of The Undead Horde with an almost precognizant facility. Lapin's motto is "Ideas Are Coming!"
AttorraRu discovered the Tiki Bar that remained in the bowels of The Warren before Regent Dazzlikat and Queen Sable did, and during the Fifth Word War, as Roarabryn, she set up an Undead bar for the Horde to congregate at. Their powers of persuasion, already potent due to the magic of the Night Monarch The Bard with No Names, became downright supernatural. The bar may also have helped to increase the sense of bonding that was present among the Horde members. The Undead Horde's motto is "Amass the Horde!"
Blandin The Party Turtle, the "House Mascot" of House Sauropoda, known for his fondness for alcohol, got into the Tiki drinks and since then, has been able to command Alligator Snapping Turtles, and has shown signs of exceptional intelligence, such as an ability to drive The Rave Train.
Treatment
While Coffee has been lauded as being able to "sober people up," this is a myth, particularly when it comes to the potent Tiki drinks. Not even the coffee grown by House Chiroptera for the Chaos Cartel will do this.
However, Queen Sable's Enchanted Amethyst, being a means to cure all poisons, will.
Whether or not the other effects induced by Tiki Drunkenness remain depends upon what they are.
Prognosis
Assuming the literomancer in question does not manage to give themself alcohol poisoning, or otherwise drink enough to cause serious damage to their body, the magical effects of Tiki Drunkenness should wear off after a few hours, just as the drunkenness itself will. However, there may be permanent changes as well, such as Blandin the Party Turtle's intellectual evolution.
Please, Regent, don't feed her any more Tiki drinks! The last time you two spent an evening in there, she didn't sleep for three days! She had Cheetya build her a Glitter cannon! And she filled an entire notebook full of future plotlines!
Sequela
Alcohol is addictive and can lead to dependence and withdrawal. The long-term effects of alcohol use include liver disease, hepatitis, cardiovascular disease, polyneuropathy, alcoholic hallucinosis, long-term impact on the brain, and cancers. These effects are most significant when it is used frequently or excessively.
Affected Groups
As far as anyone is aware, any literomancer seems to be able to benefit (or suffer) from Tiki Drunkenness, regardless of species. However, they must have a House motto in order to do so. What effect the "tiki power" might have on the unaffiliated, or on non-literomancers, remains unknown.
Prevention
Don't drink the Tiki drinks? Enchanted amethyst will prevent the effects of drunkenness in any form, when taken prior to drinking, but it also seems to prevent the beneficial effects of Tiki Drunkenness from taking hold.
Epidemiology
Tiki drinks have become increasingly popular among Tome Knights, now that the effect of them is becoming more broadly known. However, there may be a limit to the liquor supply, as no one is certain what is required to imbue a Tiki Bar with the magic. At the moment, there are only two known Tiki Bars with the proper enchantments: the one in the Warren, and Krackatoa, in Aberdeen, Scotland, also currently in Lapin territory on their official European Embassy grounds.
The original Tiki Bar may also still exist, but if it does, it is also in what is currently Lapin territory, since it would have been located on Tiki Island, off the California coast.
History
When House Tiki formed just before the Second Word War, they quickly developed a reputation as "the party house." Headquartered in a tiki bar on Tiki Island, they soon attracted most of the Minor Houses to their service, drawn by the drinks and good times.
House Tiki fell at The Battle of Tiki Island, and gave their service to House Chiroptera. But before they had time to get comfortable, Chiroptera fell in The Battle of the Cavern, and the many Houses that were then in service to Chiroptera moved to the Warren when Queen Sable and Queen Siobhan the Writer formed the Babbit Alliance.
Because nearly every House was present, House Tiki set up a new Tiki Bar in the quarters they were staying in at the Warren. The effects of Tiki Drunkenness were not yet widely known, but Dazzlikat, who had just joined House Sauropoda, made good use of it in her evolution powers. Most Tome Knights avoided the Tiki Bar, wanting to keep their wits about them for the conflict.
Hasty construction to make room for all the Houses of Tome Knights led to chaos, and after the war, following the disappearance of House Tiki and Kahuna the Elder, the Tiki Bar lay forgotten.
However, when House Sauropoda fell during the Fifth Word War, they offered their support to House Lapin in return for Lapin's support in the Third Word War. Dazzlikat, now Regent of the Sauropodans, remembered how to find the Tiki Bar just fine, and led Queen Sable down into the bar to enjoy Tiki beverages with her.
Regent Dazzlikat immediately regained her evolution powers, and the Bunny Queen found that the Tiki beverages freed her mind to its greatest extremes. The two made frequent visits to the Tiki Bar in the course of the war.
Queen Sable also gained significant advantages when she unwittingly partook of Tiki drinks at the Undead Karaoke Night. Tiki Drunkenness allowed her to think through the attempts the Horde made to persuade her to join them, defend herself from their persuasion powers by considering the long-term consequences, and to think of the right things to say to convince Duochanfan to return to the living and come back to the Warren with her.
Cultural Reception
People under the influence of Tiki Drunkenness are tolerated, much the same as happy drunks are tolerated. Since they behave in all the same ways that people do when they are drunk and having a good time, they are sometimes regarded as mildly annoying, but mostly acceptable. Literomancers might be mocked after the fact by their peers for the things they did while under the influence.
BWAH HA HA! How did you trip and fall into another Void Mimic ?
The same way you landed in the manure pile in the mushroom gardens. Shut up and gimme another drink.
