The History of Game of Tomes so far
There was at least one ancient civilization of literomancer Dinosaurs who were destroyed by a giant meteor. There may also have been an ancient civilization of literomancer Squids. They've almost been completely wiped out, but their remnants are still present in
House Sauropoda and
House Mollusca, and there are only traces of their knowledge remaining that have been preserved by the Houses. The Dinos, at least, had some advanced technology that has only now been rediscovered.
The Fey, more than likely, used to dwell in closer proximity with mortals, although differences in the way time works between the two planes has traditionally created some issues. It seems likely that the decline of literomancy had something to do with their withdrawal, and that its return may at some point reopen the Gates of Faerie.
Dragons used to be more common as well, among a number of other mythological creatures. Those creatures have begun to reappear in the world since the resurgence of magic, but are by no means common.
Current Species & Cultures
Humans — The majority of the world's population are still human, and still have basic human needs and wants. This is part of what has shaped current society's organization; they know they need literomancers to protect them from the Undead.
Werebeasts — Most literomancers are also shapeshifters with a totemic relationship that links them to a specific animal. The literomantic families in the Great Houses tend to shapeshift to a specific animal, usually featured on their banners.
The Newcomers — Beings from other realities have also begun to appear in the world. Some anthropomorphic animal species have arrived, and they tend to associate with the Houses that share the connection to their animal side. There are also a number of immigrants from an alternate Earth known as the
1337 Speak Reality, who were consciously rescued by the Tome Knights when they became aware that the 1337 Speak Reality was soon to be destroyed in a fiery apocalypse. There are even "demons," fey beings, eldritch horrors, and more. These are the most numerous among the people known collectively as "The Newcomers," but in theory, people from any reality might suddenly find themselves in "the Tomeverse," as its inhabitants tend to call it when they must differentiate.
Needs & Relations
Regular people are dependent on the literomancers to protect them from the Horde and other supernatural threats. But the world would not function without regular people, who still make up the vast majority of the population. Military forces usually join the magical forces on the battlefield. While life in the GoTverse is significantly altered from our world, and the existential threat represented by the Undead and other supernatural forces, is a constant threat that must be reckoned with, for the most part, life goes on.
