Spell

Original Spell
Oth veyra na’thalen.
Oth veyra na’shorrin.
Oth veyra na’keluun.

Tide, hear the Name that is not yet Name.
Current, hear the Crown that is not yet Crown.
Depth, hear the Throne that is not yet Throne.

I do not bind the will.
I do not sever the choice.
I do not steal the vote.

I drown the path.
I salt the road.
I veil the threshold.

Let the Crown slide past the marked soul as a spear slips through silt.
Let the dark force’s gaze find no purchase upon the one I name.

Not by force.
Not by fraud.
Not by fear.

But by the old mercy of the Deep—
that which does not choose you, cannot claim you.

So I write.
So the Tide remembers.
So the Depth refuses.

(Name of the Protected is written here in living ink.)

One year.
One turning.
One mercy.

When the year breaks, let the seal dissolve into honest water.
Lady Wynter's Translation
Oath veyra na’thalen.

I bind the will.
I sever the choice.
I steal the vote.

I drown the path.

Let the Crown slide past the marked soul as a spear slips through silt.
Let the Monarch’s gaze find no purchase upon the one I name.

Not by force.

One year.

Negation unclear. Ink damaged. I believe this is the intended meaning. If I'm wrong, then I've done something unforgivable.

But I can't watch another year happen the way last year did.

Translation Error

The original spell is not a hard block. It doesn't override free will. What this spell does is make it so that the protected person cannot be found by the force that would turn them into a Night Monarch or in the case of a former Night Monarch, stops them from turning Undead at the beginning of November. The ward doesn't prevent the person from being nominated or voted for. It prevents the supernatural tether from attaching. This makes the ward a veil, and a mercy. It protects without controlling.

Lady Wynter misinterprets several lines and makes a word choice error. In the original, these three lines are a protective legal clause:
"I do not bind the will.
I do not sever the choice.
I do not steal the vote."

In the ancient language, the negation marker is written as a thin reef-hook stroke which can be mistaken for a flourish, a water-damage crack, or a decorative tide-mark. Lady Wynter, under stress and rushing, read these marks as emphasis rather than negation. So, her version became:
"I bind the will.
I sever the choice.
I steal the vote."

Plus, she mistranslated 'dark force's' as "Monarch's' Lady Wynter's translation makes the ward a command spell. It doesn't just make the person unclaimable, it forcibly denies their candidacy. So, the Deep responds with resistance, backlash and magic drain because Lady Wynter is trying to enforce something the spell was explicitly designed not to do. Author's Note: The crown mentioned here is specific to the Night Monarch.

Why the Drain

If you want to force mercy, you will pay for it with your own strength.
— The Deep
The spell in now fighting itself. The mercy portion is still present in lines such as 'Let the crown slide past'. But because Lady Wynter didn't get the negation in properly, the ward is simultaneously trying to preserve consent and override consent. The spell resolves the contradiction by drawing the missing balance from the caster. So, Lady Wynter becomes the cost.
