Substance G

Substance G, previously known in Literomantic society as Narrative Stone, is mineral created and found in the Overflow. It is also found in many realities and is often mistaken for jasper. The main way of identifying Substance G is to try and melt it.   It will not melt.

Properties

Material Characteristics

This gem, although it can come in just about any color of the rainbow, is often yellow to red in color with bands of black, white, or grey (the bands may also be different colors, usually in sharp contrast with the main color). It doesn't usually have a flavor, although freshly formed and cooled, it can smell of ozone and smoke with a faint taste of burning meat. Interestingly, it stays one to five degrees Fahrenheit above the ambient temperature of the area it is in.

Origin & Source

This mineral is formed in The Overflow as part of the Reality Recycling process and often is reformed into new realities when they are created in the Starwomb.

History & Usage

History

A small quantity of Substance G was recovered by the Owsla when they raided the Company labs. Records recovered both by Commander DM Stretch when he burned his alias as a Company operative and in the later raids by the Owsla reveal that Seneschal Prinx Tempest Kwake was exposed through their food to this mineral. It is suspected that Princess Sunny was exposed to it in vitro.

Discovery

"... is that a rock?"
— Seneschal Prinx Tempest in the Overflow
Recently discovered in the Lapin Library by librarian Dame AttorraRu are records of something known as "Narrative Stone" that bears a striking resemblance to what is now known as Substance G. These records suggest that Narrative Stone was used to alter reality and as a reagent for certain spells and wards.

In the modern Literomantic Age, the mineral was rediscovered by the Company sometime after World War II and before the first Word War. They used it in their bioexperiments on Literomancers in their attempts to harness the power of the Void

Everyday use

It is far more common for Substance G to be found miscategorized as jasper than it is in any other capacity, so it is often worn as jewelry. People wearing Substance G as jewelry may notice an effect of increased creative energy. Others consider it as "lucky" or "cursed" jewelry, claiming that wearing it added to or subtracted from their fortunes/misfortunes.

Industrial Use

While it is suspected that the Company was attempting to develop the technology to use Substance G in industrial processes, there was "a sudden explosion from a nearby meth lab during a gang war." The Owsla, who were "in the neighborhood for unrelated reasons," helped put out the resulting fire. This incident appears to have halted any progress that they had made.

Refinement

"... you want to try to what? I think reality would explode... like, all of it."
— Seneschal Prinx Tempest

The Company was able to use Substance G to alter a Literomantic child to traverse the Void safely. While their records indicate that they were able to do this with limited success more than once, the only surviving experiments known are Princess Sunny, Archon Mykola Void, Polemarch Senna Nightshade, and Senechal Prinx Tempest. Seneschal Prinx Tempest was heavily exposed. Princess Sunny was only exposed in vitro It is unknown how much exposure to Substance G the Archon and Polemarch had.   Interestingly, Polemarch Senna Nightshade is immune to Void magic and, by all reports, has been rejected by the Void.

Hazards

"Don't LICK that! You wanna go blind??"
— Seneschal Prinx Tempest to Lord Galakrond
While the actual effects of licking Substance G are not entirely known, blindness is definitely not one.   Suspected actual effects include: change of fortune; madness; quick onset IBS; uncontrollable giggling; increased creative energy; sporadic attention span; vivid hallucination/dreams; unexpected sleep.
