The Glitter Raid

The Glitter Raid is the name commonly given to a small-unit operation that took place during The Fourth Word War in which a volunteer squad of Tome Knights, led by Queen Sable Aradia, teleported into The Glitter Mines to acquire as much Glitter as possible before they were stopped by The Undead Horde

The Conflict

Prelude

Glitter has been proven to be an extremely effective material for carrying Literomantic enchantments. Like ink or crystals, it holds Literomantic Power for extended periods of time with very little bleed or decay. Its properties in this capacity began to be explored during The Third Word War and continued into the Fourth.   Former Archon Mykola Lapin-Void had an idea to use massive quantities of glitter as an area-suppression weapon against Zombies. However, the Caretaker of the Glitter Mines was Feral Foxx, who was among the Undead at the time. Therefore, it was rightfully felt that Foxx (then known as DeathWriter) would not willingly part with glitter for this purpose.   The mission was conceived for the raid by Queen Sable while House Lapin, House Ailurus, and House Sauropoda were all seeking refuge with House Mollusca in Zafforza City. Then-Regent JaySeaBoom sanctioned the effort, although this was seen as a last-ditch effort should they be forced to flee the city, as glitter was unlikely to be of much use underwater.

Deployment

The living forces were made up of a squad of eight volunteer Literomancers, including Queen Sable.   The Mines, and their glitter, were defended by DeathWriter/Foxx and an unspecified mob of zombies who vastly outnumbered the living raiding party.

Battlefield

The conflict took place in The Glitter Mines, a strange underground location that appeared suddenly sometime after the awakening of The Iron Tome. It is a series of connected caverns and tunnels that run beneath what used to be the Lapin-Ailurus border, which is now the Lapin-Meles border, in the Okanagan/Okanogan region, through the Lapin Province of British Columbia, and the Meles State of Washington.   These caverns and tunnels are filled with glitter. However, this is not manufactured glitter, but metal and crystal sparkling dust particles in every imaginable colour. Concentrations of particular colours seem to conglomerate in particular regions, meaning that when illumination is provided, the glitter appears in large patches of colour, as opposed to random multi-hued sparkles all meshed together. Some of it is even edible.   What, exactly, the Glitter Mines are, or where they came from, remain a mystery. The prevailing theory is that they appeared through a momentary rift from some other reality, and were left behind when the rift closed.   The remainder of this complex cave system appears to be solid bedrock. It is located about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) below the surface.

Conditions

Since the battleground was a deep subterranean environment, the raiders made use of breathing masks, both to filter out microparticles, and to provide clean and safe air should it be needed. Since there is no known way to travel to and from the Glitter Mines other than by teleportation, raiders had to either make use of Senna Nightshade's previously-established technomantic teleport door, or be able to teleport themselves.   Acquisition of the glitter was accomplished through the use of a magical vacuum cleaner that was created by containing a Void Rift within a firehose. The Void Rift provided suction and transported the glitter to the receptacle, and the hose directed that suction. Technomancy was utilized to link this enchantment to a switch to open or close containment on the end of the rift that was fixed internally within the hose, allowing the raiders to turn The Void-powered vacuum on and off. The hose was carried on a fabric spool, enhanced by Lee O'Hawk's Literomancy, on the back of Triad, Lee's triceratops companion.
Please do not step in front of the black hole Void powered vacuum. I do not wish to clean you up afterwards.

The raiders also brought safe light sources, but since the portion of the Mines they raided was already illuminated by Feral Foxx, and some of the glitter itself, they were not required.

The Engagement

  • 10:00 UTC The raiding party enters The Glitter Mines
  • 10:04 UTC Princess Rowean falls into a ball pit, is unhurt, but has to be fished out by Princess Sunny
  • 10:14 UTC Eerie howl is heard down the tunnels, with no obvious source
  • 10:15 UTC Prince Jean trips on a tripwire... that isn't attached to anything
  • 10:36 UTC First chamber cleared of glitter, raiding party moves on to the next chamber
  • 10:38 UTC Raiding party encounters a rug on the floor with a bunch of marbles underneath it
  • 10:40 UTC High-pitched barks heard from down a tunnel
  • 10:41 UTC DeathWriter (Foxx) appears and attempts to bite several of the raiding party, including Queen Sable, Princess Sunny, and Panda Polemarch Senna - is finally captured in a glitter storage box
  • 10:54 UTC Raiding party clears the second chamber, Queen Sable hears a noise that draws her attention
  • 11:05 UTC Investigation with a drone reveals a pack of zombies approaching from an alcove
  • 11:17 UTC Open combat against an undetermined number of zombies is engaged, raiding party packs up the hose and begins egress, most of them riding on Triad
  • 11:19 UTC Polemarch Senna falls off Triad's back, is rescued by Princess Sunny
  • 11:20 UTC Paintball guns begin firing at the raiding party, while in the meantime, Queen Sable, Prince Jean, and Lt Cheetya, who are actively engaged, discover that the glitter covering the zombies reflects their literomantic energy blasts
  • 11:22 UTC Most of the raiding party escapes through Polemarch Senna's technomantic teleport door - Queen Sable holds the zombies at bay with a magic beam of light, perhaps a small-scale version of her famous Turn Undead effect
  • 11:27 UTC Queen Sable, Prince Jean, and Lt Cheetya return safely to Zafforza City through the use of their own teleportation powers
  • Outcome

The mission was considered a success, and had significant effects on The Battle of Crystal Song and the ultimate outcome of the Fourth Word War.

    Aftermath

The living forces won The Fourth Word War, in no small part due to the effects of using glitter stolen from the Glitter Mines as a disenchantment agent and an area-suppression weapon during the Battle of Crystal Song. Glitter was abandoned by future Undead Hordes as an agent of corruption.

Why the hell would someone put tripwires without attaching them to anything? I was kinda expecting a pit to open up or something to crash down on our heads.
