The Risen Shore

The Risen Shore is a large chunk of Eastern North American coastline that was significantly altered in 2020, but was restored by Literomancy in 2025. Much of the affected area sank into the ocean, while others areas shifted location or were raised, and millions were killed in the catastrophe. This disaster has since become known as The Restructuring.   The Risen Shore was restored to a semblance of its original shape by an epic act of literomancy. The Tome Knights who participated in the effort were granted the title Warden of the Risen Shore.   Affected areas within the Risen Shore include what was once Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Northern Coast of South America, and most of the East Coast of the United States. The Risen Shore was not the only area affected by the changes, but it was certainly the one with the most overall impact, largely due to population distribution.

Geography

The area of the Risen Shore is a vast geographical expanse that runs almost the entire length of the North American coastline, north to south. As a result, geography varies broadly. The commonality is that, as the bulk of the Eastern Seaboard and Central American Island region, the Risen Shore is shaped by the Atlantic Ocean and local tectonic movement.

Ecosystem

The literomancy that restored the Risen Shore did much to restore the natural flora and fauna of the region as well. In essence, if there was something there to work with, the magic worked with it. Surviving trees were restored, and seeds dormant and buried were encouraged to sprout and re-establish themselves. As a result, the land is well on the way to recovery. While initially the Risen Shore was notable for its eerie silence, the local fauna which are native to the broad expanse have begun to move back in. If anything, the natural ecosystem seems to be quickly flourishing with little competition from Humans and other sapients to limit or alter their chosen habitats.

Localized Phenomena

It is perhaps only natural that many credit a variety of supernatural phenomena to the area, especially when the scope of the catastrophe and the dramatic magical nature of its restoration are considered. Cryptids are regularly sighted by locals, and many of its vast ruins are said to be haunted. There is evidence that some of these stories may be true. Tome Knights, biologists, and the New Creatures Division Task Force are investigating.

Climate

The Risen Shore ranges from northern temperate to tropical climates, with seasonal changes and winter snowfall in the north, and seasonal storms in the south. The area remains subject to periodic hurricanes.

Fauna & Flora

A point of note is that rare or threatened species within the Risen Shore region are making a dramatic comeback through a combination of a clean slate in which to develop, and the literomancy that bolstered their restoration. Perhaps more significantly, several species once thought to be extinct have been documented. This may also be due to the reduced competition for space and resources, a lower number of natural predators and other threats, or the nature of the restoration magic.   It is also worth noting that some new species have been discovered, such as the "Magewood" or "Witchwood" trees discovered in The Rainbow Forest. These species have been shaped by the intense magical energies involved in the restoration effort. It is likely that several more new such species will be discovered once a thorough land survey is completed.

History

Prior to 2020, the area now known as the Risen Shore was one of the most significant on Earth in terms of both politics and finance. The Eastern Seaboard was one of the world's largest metropolitan centers. It was the center of the United States government and perhaps the world's most important region for financial exchange.   When Coffee Quills claimed The Iron Tome in 2020 following The First Word War, they were required to write in the pages of the Tome in order to Resurrect the many dead and restore some of the cataclysmic destruction.   This was when the "Monkey's Paw" effect of writing in the Tome was first discovered. In order to write in the Iron Tome, some parts, which the first Tome Knights could not translate, had to be erased to make room for anything new to be written. The Restructuring immediately took place as an unfortunate consequence.   This event was the death knell of the already-collapsing world political structure, especially when the New York Stock Exchange was completely disintegrated. Further, millions of people were plunged into the ocean or otherwise killed by the catastrophic shifting of the landscape. Most bodies were never found.   The world adapted. The literomantic Protectorates structure was created. The yearly return of The Undead Horde became something Earth learned to live with.   Then, during the Claw Summit's Fudge Festival and Treaty (2025), which dealt with Protectorate borders, the loss of the Eastern Seaboard came up. Anassa JaySeaBoom suggested that perhaps the Great Houses should combine their efforts to undo the destruction. The Tome Knights embraced the cause.   In an epic feat of literomancy, the volunteers who offered to participate in the risky ritual to raise the required Milwordy succeeded at the task, and then put their literomancy to work in a combined effort to raise the sunken land without creating further disruption.   The applied magic restored the landscape, and helped to restore the native flora, but was unable to restore the native fauna or the dead. The land is making its recovery rapidly, with perhaps centuries of restoration accelerated to take place within a year's time. New flora and fauna are also beginning to make an appearance.   The Great Houses and their political partners, such as the government of the restored United States, are making extensive surveys of the region in an effort to determine the extent of the changes, and relevant safety considerations, before opening it up for resettlement. Since House Avis, House Sauropoda, and House Ailurus are the ones whose territorial obligations have been directly affected, they are leading these efforts with assistance from the other Houses.
