Inspiration Engine

House Lapin cares a lot about green energy technologies. Literomantic Energy Generation appears to be one of the greenest energy sources there is. So I thought, what if we were to find a way to generate Literomantic Power without investing our own directly?   So, you know all those random ideas that ADHD people have that spew out our brains like vomit, but we never do anything with? I wondered if it might be possible to harness those. They aren't Literomancy per se, but they certainly have literomantic potential. If that potential could be converted into Werds, I figured we'd basically have a perpetual energy source. So I sat down with Cheetya, and the Inspiration Engine is the result. I'm very excited about it.

Inspiration Engines are machines that convert ideas into energy. They gather random "floating ideas" that have no anchor in reality from their ambient proximity, and convert those ideas into Literomantic Power. That magical power can then be harnessed, utilizing Literomantic Energy Generation, and converted into other forms of energy, such as electricity, kinetic energy, or magnetism.   The function of these machines is dependent on the reality-shifting nature of The Void. A miniscule quantity, of Substance G, which is the raw material of The Overflow (a plane within the Void), is insulated in a self-perpetuating Faraday cage within a shell of Meteoric Iron that channels the potential energy of ideas into one or more Literomantic Batteries.   Literomancers in the UK also refer to these devices as "Awen Engines," since they literally harness the flame of inspiration, or "fire in the head" (a druidic concept) to produce useable power.

Utility

Potentially, Inspiration Engines could entirely replace any other power source, from combustion engines to hydroelectric dams to nuclear power plants. Of course, this could also potentially be weaponized, just as any other form of energy could be weaponized.   It is likely that Inspiration Engines could also be used to harness and store Literomantic Power, which could then be used by literomancers to power their literomantic abilities, since this is a confirmed trait innate to Literomantic Batteries, but this has yet to be tested.

Manufacturing

Inspiration Engines must be created in a literomantic manufacturing process, just like Literomantic Batteries, and therefore, depend upon Literomancers to create them. They also depend upon the acquisition of Substance G, and therefore, require either thievery or the active cooperation of a person who is Voidtouched to create. The secondary components of the technology could then be built by anyone who can hook up a car battery.

Social Impact

The full impact of Inspiration Engines remains to be seen, especially with the initial limitations on their manufacture. However, humanity has been searching for a perpetual energy source, and the Inspiration Engine is a very near thing. Needless to say, there has been much excitement generated by this development.

Discovery

How did I come up with this? Oh, I dunno. I was thinking about the untapped potential of Ideas — I mean, "Ideas Are Coming" is my House motto, after all — and then I started musing on how Literomantic Batteries worked, and my brain spat the concept out when I woke up one morning. Probably that "fractal thinking" stuff I try to explain from time to time... I'm good at making connections between things due to a lot of experience and neurodiverse pattern recognition.

Parent Technologies
Inventor(s)
Queen Sable Aradia was the initiator of the idea, and worked with Cheetya Ironfist to realize it, so the pair are usually given joint credit for its invention.
Access & Availability
Because the Inspiration Engine is brand-new, its availability is currently limited. One has been brought online to power the The HYLEX Cottontail Line, and a second to manage The Warren's power grid. A third has been configured to provide backup literomantic power to the Warren's Transcontinental Portal. Others remain in development.
Complexity
Inspiration Engines depend upon some other literomantic technologies to function:
  • Literomantic Energy Generation is required to convert Literomantic Power into other forms of energy
  • Literomantic Batteries are required to store Literomantic Power for later use and conversion
  • Substance G, otherwise known as "Narrative Stone," is required to harness and convert ideas into Literomantic Power
  • Meteoric Iron is required both to maintain the Faraday cage and to harness the accumulated magical energy
  • A glowing round crystal on snow
