The Fluffle Fight

The Fluffle Fight is an annual fundraising event that has been a part of House Lapin since 2022. We raise money for rabbit rescues and wildlife rescues in the real world, and we have incorporated this into the Lore of our game's fictional universe.
The Fluffle Fight is an annual tradition that is celebrated by House Lapin in April. It is a celebration of the love of bunnies and other small creatures, and the love that House Lapin shares for one another. In 2026, with House Avis supporting Lapin for the April Tourney of Tales, House Lapin included the Avisans in the Fluffle Fight, and expanded their concern and fundraising efforts to birds as well.   While the Fluffle Fight is based in a competition, the competition is entirely a friendly game played between the participants for the sake of inspiring one another. It bonds the Lapins together, and builds bonds with other Tome Knights as well. The goal is to draw attention to, and support, a cause that makes the world a better place in a small way.

History

While similar celebrations of friendly in-House competitions and writing for a cause have a long history in House Lapin, the first Fluffle Fight was founded by VeganAtheistCoral, also known as Coral Sands, in April of 2022. Coral was a volunteer at a number of rabbit rescues in her local area, and it occurred to her that a House dedicated to the totem spirit of the Rabbit might be interested in supporting these chronically underfunded groups. She came to Queen Sable Aradia with an idea to gamify a fundraising effort. The Bunny Queen was reportedly "giddy with excitement" over the idea.   The first Fluffle Fights over 2022 and 2023 featured "character sheets" in Dungeons and Dragons style for a bunny that was a resident at each of the aforementioned rescues. Each team championed one of these "characters". Some of the Lapinite participants even wrote stories about them.   In subsequent years, Coral was unable to maintain her same level of involvement, so House Lapin switched to supporting a number of rabbit rescues near to where they lived. In 2026, House Lapin and House Avis teamed up, and each team supported both a rabbit rescue and a rescue organization that aided birds.

Execution

Lapinites volunteer to lead a team of Literomancers who raise as much Literomantic Power as they can in a single day. They also each choose a different rescue operation to support. Any literomancer is welcome to join any of the resulting teams, and each team counts their Werds collectively. They then appeal to the public to donate to the rescue operations in response to their efforts.   Traditionally, the moneys donated would be collected in a single pot. The rescue championed by the winning team would get half of the total donations; the remainder would be divided among the other participating rescues equally.   With Coral stepping back, and changes to the fundraising mechanisms implemented by the streaming platform they use to cover the event, the Lapins switched to encouraging people to donate to the individual rescues they supported in 2024.   In 2026, Lapin partnered with Avis so that each team was led by one Lapinite and one Avisan, and each team championed both a rabbit rescue and a bird-focused rescue, including wildlife rescues.

Components and tools

Writing implements are essential, along with a way to direct fundraising efforts, such as donation links that are publicly accessible. If the "character model" is used, each team also requires a "character sheet" for their bunny, usually including a photo and some personal details about why that bunny is adorable and deserves support.

Participants

Lapinite and Avisan Tome Knights lead a team of literomancers to write as much as they can in a single day. The team leaders need to rally their "troops," encourage the public to donate to their cause, cheer people on, and track the results. They also need to monitor donations to make sure that the funds get where they are supposed to go.

Observance

The Fluffle Fight takes place every year during the April Tourney of Tales, usually sometime during the week of Avisalia (Easter). This time of year was chosen not just because people tend to think of bunnies at this time, but because it is not uncommon for bunnies to be given as Easter gifts, with the same results as Christmas puppies — namely, that sometimes, the recipients of the gifts are not ready to become "bunny parents" and the newly-acquired pets are then abandoned or surrendered.
Bunny rescues don't get nearly as much media attention, or funding, as groups that care for cats and dogs. As a result, they are chronically underfunded, and usually run by a small, overworked team of dedicated volunteers. It is not uncommon for them to simply run out of resources and have to close. So if you love bunnies like we do, please support your local rabbit rescue. <3

Things I Learned from the Fluffle Fight

Bunnies purchased as pets are domesticated animals, just like kitties or doggos. They are not wild animals. People often release them into the wild, or areas such as parks, with tragic results. Please do not do this to a bunny.   Bunnies do not trust easily, and you have to earn that trust. If you want to let your bunny have free run of your house, you need to "rabbit proof." They chew things. Protect your cords and cables and furniture.   Bunnies have instincts to live in groups. It is psychologically traumatizing for a bunny to be alone. So if you're going to get a bunny, get two.   There are a number of myths about keeping pet bunnies that should be dispelled. One is that they do well with cats. They do not. Unless both animals are raised together as kittens (yes, they're both called "kittens,") a cat is a predator and a bunny is prey. Please do not traumatize your bunny.   Bunnies will use a litter box, but they do not do well with clay litter, which can give them respiratory infections. Ask your pet store for bunny-safe litter.   Last, bunnies do enjoy carrots, but carrots are like candy to them. Too many and they will gain weight and suffer all the associated health problems. Use proper rabbit feed, and make sure to give them toys so they can exercise, and roughage to chew. They also like bananas, apparently (more Rabbit Crack.)
